ABOUT THE BAND
The Backyard Betties are a Calgary-based folk/Americana band known for honest songs, tight harmonies, and live shows that feel more like a hang than a performance. Their music lives in the real stuff: love, loss, starting over, and figuring yourself out. Live, the Betties are welcoming, funny, and deeply human. They play with heart, talk like real people, and have a rare ability to make a room of 300 feel as connected as a house concert. Their shows are full of laughter, reflection, and moments where you catch yourself thinking, yeah… I’ve been there too.
Award-winning songwriter Nancy Laberge leads the band with heartfelt lyrics and quick-wit stage banter, pulling audiences in with stories that are grounded in lived experience. Pip Hazell’s rich harmonies and infectious energy lift every song, while Mark Cassano’s expressive guitar lines add texture and emotion throughout. Multi-instrumentalist Aleksandra Danicic rounds out the sound with driving bass and soulful fiddle, giving the band its roots-forward backbone.
In 2024, The Backyard Betties won the YYC Music Award for Folk Recording of the Year for their single "The High". They followed it up with another nomination for "Blame it on the Red Wine" in 2025, solidifying their place in Canada’s roots music scene. While visiting Edinburgh, Scotland, Laberge entered the Edinburgh Folk Club Songwriting Competition and took home the People’s Choice Award for the band’s upcoming Canadian release “Not Good For Me”. The band is currently working on their next album, “Good To Be Back Home”.
Rooted in connection, community, and craft, The Backyard Betties are earning a reputation as a band that not only sounds exceptional but leaves audiences feeling seen, understood, and uplifted. Their music does not offer easy answers, it offers recognition, release, and the comfort of knowing you are not alone.
